Short thread-IP timing question

When I replaced my injector pump, the rebuilder said not to line up the lines but put the line on the pump one line width toward the pass. side. Does this advance the timing and if so will the truck run differently? It runs real good now, has pretty good power and fuel milage, could be better, and has that rattle whem cold advanced is on. Will advancing slightly make it better? Any info appreciated.

ehh, i dont think advancing it would be better. advancing a gasoline engine would be good, but for a diesel you would want to retard it slightly.

According to the factory manual the timing should be 8.5* BTDC when using the pulse timing method at sea level and with average #2 diesel. I am not sure but I think the timing using the luminosity probe is 1.5* ATDC. If your timing is advanced to 9-9.5* BTDC your motor should rattle a little during the cold start up, and you will have a little bit more power and mpg as well. Don't go to far advanced though or it will damage the engine. Jim

I have a kent-moore timing meter I bought on e-bay, and have verified that with the rattle on acceleration with a cold engine, that goes away when the cold advance cuts off, puts you very close to 8.5 BTC with the pulse probe. A bit more power comes from turing up the fuel after you increase the exhaust, get ram air, and install a pyro. Better milage comes from putting a raw egg between your foot and the go pedal. LOL

FWIW using the scribe marks at the 12 o'clock position of the IP and housing, mine is advance toward the passanger side about 1/2 a scribe mark.

Thanks for the replies. Right now I have the marks lined up and it rattles a bit when cold. As soon as the high idle turns off it gets much quieter. I don't have the timing tools but by your replies it sounds like it's probably pretty good. The truck runs real good but it could use more power at certain rpms. It's a 93 E350 NA so no 4x4. I'm going to put the ram air through the rad support and when I have a few bucks go for the bigger exhaust. The other thing I would like to do is replace the y pipe with something better. Right now the exhaust looks like something from a gas motor. 2 or 2 1/2 inch. I'm still looking.
