Question Two small problems--1986 F-150

1986 F-150 5.0 FI engine and automatic overdrive.Regular cab 2 wheel drive.

went on a short trip this past weekend and on the way it started pouring rain, went to turn on the wipers and nothing. tried repeatedly but never could get them to work. There is a clicking sound and even the headlights will dim as if the switch is trying to power the wipers. Any help would be appreciated.

2nd problem, coming back, the rear fuel tank was reading low but not empty, I had the selector on the rear tank, started sputtering like it was running out,I switched it to the front tank where I had about 1/2 full and it picked up and ran fine. Stopped at a station, put 8 gallons into rear tank and one I got back up to driving speed, switched back to rear tank. The engine started sputering just as if it were running out.Switched back and forth several times with the same results.Could this be a fuel pump issue? My dad left me this truck and though it is 22 years old, it has been very reliable, just had these two problems crop up on the same trip.Could they be related problems? Thanks

Wiper problem could be the switch, wiper motor or possibly the arm came loose from the motor.

Fuel selector valve is probably shot. Very common and expensive to fix on these trucks.

OK, I think I know how to check the wiper, but what is the step for checking the fuel selector switch? Thanks

I had the very same problem while driving any any speed with my truck.

The fuel selector valve is very expensive.
Last time I priced one at the local Ford dealer, It was around 600 bucks.
Musta been the gold plated model price they quoted.

You would first have to get a wiring diagram and make sure that you have power to the solenoid in both positions.

Most of the time they just stick and cannot be "un-stuck".

On mine, I just removed the valve all together and only use the front tank. My rear tank was already gone when I got the truck, and my new bed didn't have the second fuel door anyway so it worked out for me.

I could never afford to keep fuel in BOTH tanks these days any way. It's hard enough keeping gas in one.
