Sorry if this has been discussed before. I did a quick search and didn't find what I was looking for. I'm looking for some type of insulation to put under the carpet in my cab to help eliminate some noise. I have a 6-speed and get a lot of noise coming in around the stick. Any suggestions?
A lot of guys use Dynamat or something similar to it. Some time back there was a good thread in the SD/HD forum about sound insulating with good photos... I'll try to find it for you.
Make sure the boot is tightened down all the way. If that thing is just a little loose it makes an unbelievable amount of noise. I did the doors, floor and back wall with Raamat on mine. It did make a noticeable difference, nothing too extreme, but enough to notice.
I read the sound deadener showdown referenced in that thread when I decided which product to use. Note: If you do this, be prepared to throw away whatever pair of pants you are wearing. The backing will creep out of the seams and end up on you.
I would recommend that you pull the valve covers and retorqe the rocker arm pedastals and fuel injector hold down bolts.
I went through mine as a matter of routine and was surprised to see nearly half of them were not tight on an engine that only had 75,000 miles on it.
Rocker pedastal bolts are 20 ft lb
injector retainer bolts are 120 inch lb.
After doing that you will be surprised at how much tighter the engine sounds.
Mine lost a lot of general rattling sounds while underway on the freeway.
I was amazed how much quieter my truck was after I did this. My wife even commented it sounded like a new truck.

I don't remember. I had a nice write up with lots of pics ready to go when my old laptop took a dump and I lost that info. I'll do some digging and see if I can find what I bought. I believe I still have part of a roll left over, so I just need to find out how many I bought.

Thanks. I plan on doing this in the future and I was just looking to get an estimate on how much I would need.
Did mine as well with the B-Quite. I doubled the floors and back of cab. single layered the doors. It made a differance, enough that my wife said it was well worth the money. HERE is what I got and where I got it. It's not a fast job. All seats, console, seatbelts, carpet and door panels come out first thing. I cut stuff in smaller pieces to work with. Didn't look as good a the pretty long strips, but was much easier to handle and looks the same now with the carpet back in. If you do it, mark all of your holes as you put the mat down. I did thanks to another members suggestions and glad I did.
A good trick for marking the holes is to leave a bolt in there, then cut an "X" across the head of the bolt after you roll whatever it is you're working with over the top of it, then you just push it down over the bolt and you're set. You can come back later and trim out the center if you want to make the bolt easier to start.
