Glow plug failure?

Can anyone tell me what the symptoms are of a glow plug failure. and how to replace if I do have a problem?

Hard starting when cold and blue smoke on startup. They are easy to change, remove the IC tube and valve cover, pull the wiring off the GP, then use a 10mm deep socket to remove the GP.
