2005 F250SD Ext cab, regular pedals (not the power adjust ones).
I had a scare one time a few weeks back with my new (used) truck. I was backing into a gas pump and the engine started to rev while I had my foot on the brake. Scared the crap out of me but I managed to brake it enough to park it. I realized after that that it was me. I had my foot on the brake but because I was looking over my left shoulder I was inadvertantly pressing the accel at the same time as my right foot rolled over to the right due to my body position. Thinking this through and trying my other vehicles I see that this is not a problem with most cars. It seems the position of the gas-brake pedals caused the surprise. What I noticed is that when you press on the brake a bit until it engages, the brake pedal matcehs up its height with the gas pedal height on this truck, which it does not seem to do in most cars (that I own, or have driven). Well, I vowed to pay more attention, but then it happened to me again. I knew what was happening, but it seems to be too easy to do this. So...Anyone else see this, and more importantly how do I change this so I don't have the...Ummm "Audi" Unintended experience in my Superduty.
I have power pedals in my excursion and had the same thing happen to me at a red light when I was leaving work. I was fidgeting with something and kinda not paying attention. I knew something wasnt right and caught on quite quickly as to what was up. Your not alone. I do wear a size 13 1/2 shoe and pretty much always wear a work boots so I'm not sure how much this has to do with anything.
I had this problem a few times when I first got my truck - doesn't seem to happen more than once every three months now and I immediately know what is happening. If you aren't used to it, it is very easy to brake and accelerate at the same time. I never had this problem on my GMC but now I think my foot has learned where to go on the Ford. There is no fix to this that I now of other than keeping your foot positioned better when braking. It really only seems to happen if my foot is angled to the right when I hit the brakes.

This is a design choice for most trucks (especially the Super Duties/heavy duties). In a fully loaded truck, many drivers find themselves in challenging position of getting their rig rolling from a dead stop while facing uphill with a full load--i.e. a ton or two of gravel in the box, a 30+ foot fifth wheel trailer in tow, etc. To combat this, Ford has lined up the pedals so that the driver can maintain pressure on the brake pedal (to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards) while still providing easy access to the accelerator to bring up RPMs and facilitate getting things moving forward again.
This is obviously a situation that your average car will never have to deal with!
I've never noticed this in my SD but had the same scare you did (in my garage!) in my wife's '01 Taurus.

Interesting that you mention that. Ford has a TSB about pedal spacing on Tauruses and Sables with power adjustable pedals. Some were built with the pedals too close together--They are adjustable---ever so slightly.
No extra wide feet here. It's just that motion of turning around to look over my left shoulder that naturally causes my foot on the brake to roll to the side and I can hit the gas at the same time. If I were a little more precise with my foot placement and getting it fully ON the brake pedal, it wouldn't happen. I can see how it could be a feature as Deluxe05 said, but to me it is more of a hazard. If I could scooch the brake pedal over 1/2" that would probably make me happy. Actually I haven't looked to see if it is adjustable or not, but I doubt it.

I wear 15E's. I not only have the problem in my Excursion but about anything I drive. And I can just about forget about the rice burners. If I can even fit in one, I can almost hit all three pedals at the same time!

Forget about it if you try and drive a rice burner--You need size 6a feet to drive them !!!
