I went to my buddies yesterday to help him with a bad ignition switch that had spun all the way around. I put a new tumbnler in and tried to start it. the tumbler turns like it should but I noticed it was sticking at the start position and something didn't feel right. I took the air bag, wheel, turn switch and upper inner shaft out of the column. There is a two part plastic rod in the column that activates the actual switch box down below underneath. There is a small metal pin that the two plastic rods are conected together with where they pivot. This pin came out and when the key is turned to the off position, the lower plastic rod does not retract in turn pulling the protruding pin back on the actual switch back and turning the truck off. If someone out there knows what I am talking about I need to know if I remove the column completley now that I have found the problem can I rebuild this column? Or do I need to start looking for a good used one. I don't know if these small internal parts are available for individual purchase. Thanks in advance for any help. Travis.
I assume what you are talking about is the ign. switch actuator which is made of white metal in the earlier trucks. You should be able to get parts easy.Try directfordparts.com or ftepartsguy.com or the parts may be available as aftermarket parts. In any case you should not have to take the column out.
I looked on the parts web site and the parts I need are inside what I think is called the jacket. the parts are white but I am pretty sure they are plastic and not metal. The upper one has a small hole in the end where a metal pin presses in and the lowqer one has a grove that the pin rides in. I am going to see if I can get a diagram from Ford of a break down. Thanks Travis.
The parts you are describing you should be able to get from another donor column. I would sugest replacing with new pieces. LMC Truck sells parts for our style columns but I can not remember if they sell those pieces.
Good luck and if you do decide to replace the column do not ask ford for help. PM me and I will help you with the info. I called ford when I had to replace my column and they told me that it had to be one from the same model truck with the same options. My F-250 now has a column out of an '87 Bronco.
