hey guys, just got new 4.56 gears in the truck in my sig, now my speedo is WAY off and so is my odo. I was under the impression the gears would make the speedo more accurate, however clearly i was wrong. So is this going to effect anything besides the odometer? Are my shift points alright? Like i said this is all for the truck in my sig, i just want to make sure im not messin with anything that will be negatively effected. If its just the speedo and odo thats fine im not lookin to sell the truck ever and i can get used to a wrong speedo no porblem.
thanks guys
Im about to install 4.56s into my truck, so im interested in the responses to this thread.
BTW how do you like the performance difference with your 4.56s
i love it, besides the aforementioned items its great ive only got seat of the pants performance numbers but it is a lot more responsive, it doesnt hunt going up hills and it takes much less pedal to get up to speed, with the 35 inch tires its ratio is just a little better than stock, so it has good get up and go and cruising it needs very little pedal to stay going at a constant speed, i definitely would recommend it to anyone! go for it man
What is the actual OD of the tire? Revs per mile is one of the factors along with the gear ratio that the computer looks at.
4.10's proabably would have gotten the speedo closer to stock.
The speedo being off will effect shift points because the MPH is not correct.
It may not hurt anything, but if it is reading too fast, your odometer will rack up more miles than are actually on the truck.
I would suggest a good tuner like the Diablosport Predator. This will allow you to make more power, increase mileage and correct the speedo, as well as firm up the shifts.
the od of the tire is 34.7 inches. im not sure what the rpms are exactly cuz the speedo is off, but if im on the freeway cruising with traffic, which in LA is about 70, my rpms sit right about 2500 rpms. how much does one of the mid range programmers cost? im a college student and always trying to get things on a budget. Can someone elses programmer change the settings in my truck and then be removed and have the settings stay?
I have the same setup on an 02 with 35s, 4.56s, and a 5.4L. If you have done your math correctly...at 70mph you should turn 2200rpms. You did right by measure about 34.5inches for the "35in" tires. If you get a programmer you can adjust all the above mentioned items, gears, speedo, shift points, etc. If you have 35s and 4.56 gears...doing the math puts you alittle over an affective gear ratio of 4.10. More between 4.10-4.20 I believe.
This is a good thread I'm currently running 3:73's stock in my 97 LD 4x4 on 35's...well probably 32.5's with the tread wear lol. From what bla is saying i def. want the 4:56's for my current setup, whats the largest size tire you can effectively run on a 4:56 ratio? I plan to grow my friends.

If you went with 37s with 4.56, you would have approximatly a 3.8 ratio.
The 4.56s give you a slightly better (lower) than stock ratio with 35s. You could do the math to find out what tire size will give you the stock ratio, but im too lazy to do it ha! If you run much bigger than 38s youll need to bump up to around 4.88 or larger. Triton the 4.56s are worth every penny! You get torque back you can feel and throttle response is improved. My buddy, getdown, who posted earlier, hooked me up with mine so i got em for 150 bucks! sweet! but check out NATIONAL DRIVETRAIN: Differential, Drivetrain & Ring and Pinion Supersite they have good prices...and might ship you a free one by mistake ha!
I'm pretty sure the Vehicle Speed Sensor is intimately involved w/these electronic-shift four-speed automatics. This speed sensor counts ring gear revs, which translates to speed by the computer.

Also strongly suspect that the Throttle Position Sensor plays a key role. The TPS signal is independant of RPM & substitutes for the old throttle cable kick down. Throttle position is interpreted as demand by the computer. I believe these automatics are also electronic-hydraulic hybrids, meaning internal fluid pressures dependant on load & input still "changes gears" for the most part-w/electronic assist in controlling when & under what conditions.
im running a 355/60/20 on my truck. rims are 20x10. i believe my tires are the equilalent to 38 inch tire give or take a few centimeters. i have a 7 inch lift and 3 inch body lift and these are the biggest tire i can fit. i had to do some trimming to stop the rubbing up front. im throwing on a 12 inch bulletproof lift in may/april so ill be at 15 inches (with the 3 inch body lift still). my current gears are 4.56 but i will be bumping up to the 4.88's.
