Brother will be getting programmer for Dmax

Ward is getting a programmer for his 2005 Dmax - things will be interesting!
Stock vs stock its quicker than my 6.0 so we will see how things go. He has the front torsion springs turned up two inches and a set of 285/75/16 BFG AT's on it and the stance looks pretty good compared to stock

A friend of mine has a 05 Duramax too, and both our trucks stock he could beat me. When I installed the exhaust, banks cold air intake and high ram I could get him no problem around 1 1/2 to 2 truck lengths for sure. No chip on mine yet. He now has an 08 Duramax and there is no way i can beat his truck now, that thing stock is pretty fast. I want to get a programmer/chip for mine but I am not sure which is the best to buy for the 6.0 L diesel..... any ideas?

The SCT is by far the one that has become the favorite after the smoke cleared. All the modules dont have the ability to tune transmission shifting so they play havoc with the Torqshift but they have the ability to be tuned on the fly. Thats where programmers like the SCT have the advantage. There are probably three companies that have earned a good reputation for service. I chose Innovative Diesel for mine because I liked the way in which my questions were answered when I was buying. The feature I like is the way they can be upgraded and fine tuned by email - if you dont like something, they fix it and send you a new file to run. The tunes are not generic - they make them to suit your needs and there are so many options available.

Now, after telling you that, I will warn you that you run the risk (and its a very, very, very high risk!!!) of stretching the headbolts and blowing out the headgaskets on any 6.0 engine when power is added. My truck has ARP headstuds installed as an upgrade and there is no way I would run a programmer on an engine that still had the stock headbolts - no exceptions.
I find it hard to beleive that some engines can take the power but there are so many instances of failure that the chance of wrecking a good engine outweigh the benefits. That being said, once done properly, the experience is incredible. An 8000 pound musclecar! I wouldnt drive a stock one - they are lame!

at the risk of being told where to go... we know how it'll turn out. the dmax will eat your PSD causing the Dmax to shine brighter in your eyes...

You never know.... lol
Sounds like what I've heard before -- go ahead and chip your Ford but you'll blow her up!!!!
Still not decided what to do, don't think I want to spend a bunch on strengthening the motor, maybe play it safe and not worry about a chip.

Colin, thats the smart thing to do but do yourself a favor and dont drive a chipped one. Whenever I return mine to stock I find myself hating the truck! Once the power returns its all good - man, I am a sick puppy!
Sherm, time will tell as to how the Dmax works and which programmer he gets. I have spent lots of time reading (and screening posts because every site is biased in its own direction) but the Dmax is quick both stock and when programmed. The truck is a bit lighter which really shows in acceleration.
I am thinking more along the lines of a Hummer H2 SUT (the one with the little box) as my next vehicle a few years down the road. The 2008 has the new 6.2 engine which is more powerful and economical than the 6.0 it replaced and in a few years there will be some cheap lease returns / buybacks / dealer auctions etc. They are a real stand out in the crowd / show off vehicle and hey, thats ME!

Ive always heard the duramax was quick in the stock form.

All ive ever driven extensively in the duramax was an 03 that we had for a shop truck in PA, and it wasnt that great for quickness or power. My truck was way better in both departments, and the other shop truck a 03 6 liter was better then the chevy in power and speed too.

Ive heard though the quickness really shines with the newer ones.

I think the original is too rough looking and crude - imagine driving one on a long trip! The H2 is just right in my books
