i am considering putting a 460 into my 90 f250 4x4 5-speed. i have a 351w but i would like more torque. i know i would need new mounts and a bell housing, will my 351 headers bolt to a 460 or should i just replace all the exhaust to one made for a 460. will i have to change anything else out or will the rest of it all just bolt up. on the other hand maybe i should just build a bigger 351w, what do yall think.
i think i would be better off just putting in a built 351w then i could do it to my own choice and save some hassle. but more input is very welcome especially good combos that would give me good torque and reasonable fuel mileage.
reasonable fuel mileage and 460 are not words that you use in the same sentence.
I would go for a 351w build. Maybe go to a 408. I know converting to MAF will allow you to build alot more power, gt40 heads, a nice cam, and a free flowing exhasut would be a good start.
With a manual tranny you could drop a carbed 460 in there pretty cheap for sure, it just depends upon your goals and intended use. I want the power but I also want the best fuel milage possible at all driving speeds and I have to pass emissions tests. My upgraded 5.8 averaged about 13 in city and got 17+mpg hwy, that's a stock motor with a cam and full exhaust. With a better flowing topend it will produce over 400ft/lb TQ and 350+ HP. This isn't exactly cheap to do.. I have about $1500 invested in the mass air conversion and tuner, and the heads and intake system will cost another $2k. This puts the motor in big block power territory but with small block fuel milage when you're not using all that HP... best of both worlds.

right now, your SD setup will kill any power mods you do.
just keep the 351, swap the ECU to MAF and call it good.
or, if you live in a non-emissions area...get a carb'd 351 and build it. You can make some wicked power and still have decent MPG if you know how to tune it.
but your best bet for MPG will be the MAF setup. SD sucks. and a 460 conversion will cost you way too much money. You'd be better off buying a new(er) truck than swapping a 460 in
SD = speed density. MAF = mass air flow. They are two different engine management systems. Speed density looks at how fast the engine is spinning and the temperature and barometic pressure of the atmosphere to determine how much fuel to inject. It assumes that displacement always stays the same. Mass air actually counts the molecules of air coming into the engine (roughly, anyway) and bases its fuel calculations on that, so it's much more ready to handle mods.
However, you can't just swap your ECU with a mass air one and call it good. Anyone who makes that claim is probably not familiar with either system.
Converting to mass air offers NO increase in fuel economy over a properly running SD system. SD does not "suck" - there is a reason most of the lightning guys stick with SD.
Most guys with 460's are happy to get 12 mpg empty, and that's with a conservative foot. If you stomp on it, you can watch the gas gauge fall.
Depending on what your budget is, you can squeeze a little or a lot more torque out of your 351. The factory cam, heads, and exhaust are all strangling the motor.
