My 97 psd has had issues starting the last week or so and today it would not start so i got some ether and then it started once, then the second time it took alot of ether and barely started. It ran good once it started, then i got it home and was clearing the other vehicles outta my drive and it stalled on the road now it wont start. I have no mods on this engine just exhaust.
My buddy says it could be my cam positioning sensor, could it be? and is this the sensor held on by the timing pointer on the lower pass. side in the pulleys? Any other ideas that could cause this if not the cps???? thanx alot
I think your buddy is correct...CPS, especially if it's been a while since it's been replaced.
Try starting it and look for smoke out of the tail pipe and tach movement.
Ether is a very bad thing to use on these engines...it will cause major damage if the glow plugs are energized at the same time you are shooting ether into it. You just might get a really big explosion...in the intake and out the turbo.

Ya that ether reved it pretty good on start up thats for sure!! I do not want to use ether no more so now i gotta fix it. I just needed the ether to get me through work and home.
I also do get smoke out the tail pipe at around 2500rpm in park with some sputtering. Kinda thought i had bad fuel so I put in fresh fuel with double the howes and still the same ol s**t. Thank you for the info i will replace that sensor this afternoon. Wish me luck!!
Well I put a new cps in and still no start. I found the wiring on the ipr has had its coating stretched back and both wires on the sensor were touching so now i went to the autowrecker and cut a plug outta another ride for mine i gonna splice them together and see if that fixes it, sure hope so or i might need a new ipr.
If the IPR wiring was bad that was probably your problem. I doubt that it did any damage to the IPR itself, it's just an electromagnet that opens and closes the valve.
Thank you blue mule and Cuda Jim I appreciate all your input. You guys make sites like so worth while!!! I got a new pigtail from the wrecker and booya we are up and running!!
