Affordable, maybe the entire kit including electronics, pump(s), injectors and adapters for somewhere in the range of 9k-10k, but you'd need a fully built motor. That's what im holding out on the 7.3 for
The only reason they don't hold together, seems to be the electronics. The IDM wont allow the injectors to fire more that one at a time, so upwards of 2800 RPM there is not enough time for the injector to fully plunge out all the oil and fuel, driven by an electrical signal. Our injectors have way too much mass to them, they move slowly compared to other types of injectors. We are limited in making power basically anything below 3500 to 3000 RPM. So therefore if you want to make good HP numbers, you have to make good torque. That torque number at a slower RPM is what splits blocks and shoots out rods. The 7.3 blocks dont seem to like much over 1500 pounds of torque, before they start letting go. Most of the guys are making that around 2500 rpm, which means at 1400lbs @2500 rpm, is 714hp. If you take and knock that torque down to 1200 at 3000, it would be 685hp, but MUCH easier on the engine and internal parts. If you could keep injecting fuel at a fast rate, knock the RPM up to 3500 with a mere 1000lbs of torque, and the HP would be 666. Keep the same torque at 4000 RPM and you would have 761 horsepower, and i bet you could do that on stock forged rods, since they are under MUCH LESS combustion pressure for a much shorter time than they are at 2500. And lets just say, that if you could make 1000lbs of torque at 4500 rpm (which commonrails can easily do), you'd have well over 850hp.
And just to put it in perspective, D OT is made to leave the starting line around 7000 rpm. That would only take 1150 lbs of torque to get the 1500hp that it's claimed to have.
And that dragster, only has to make 1350lbs of torque at 6000 to make ~1550hp. That will propel that very light dragster down the track, they are hoping for 6's once it is all said and done.
