Hello, Im new to the forum and I just bought a 1985 F-150 super cab to pull my trailer with, from what i was told it use to be a 302 truck but now has a 300 inline 6 in it with a automatic non overdrive, the young man who had it had a starter/flywheel problem, he told me he thout it was the thrust bearnings but i dont think that its the problem, He put a flywheel in it and now the starter bendix is chewed up, I think he eather put in the wrong flywheel or he put it in backwards, from the pics i have seen of the flywheels at local parts store the one that is in it is for the tranny with overdrive, but i will not be 100% sure till i get it out next week and the tooth ring on the flywheel is facing the motor, it has been a while sence i have done any work on ford products and cant remember which way the tooth ring goes, Can anybody send me in the right direction ???
I don't believe it will go in backwards without hitting the engine. Make sure you have the sheetmetal plate inbetween the engine and the tranny. Also make sure you have the correct starter. I think the manual starter is different from the automatic starter. If someone is swapping engines from one truck to the other, there is no telling what you have in there.
I cant remember which starter is which way, but yeah the manual tranny and autos use different starters. One of them sticks further into the bellhousing than the other. They will both bolt up but the wrong one wont last long. I went through 3 starters on my Capri before I learned they were different.
Well It has the plate between the motor and the tranny, i also went to my local yard that i have delt with for years and got a used starter (dont want to go new till i get problem fixed) put the starter in and all it would do is bounce against the flywheel, i have a 1/8" spacer for the starter and put that in and it started 1 time but is sounded bad, I went to local parts store and checked the starters out (auto and man) and i have the right one, so i guess i will wait till i drop the tranny next week to see what i find, thank you for your input !!
