Engine hours oil change interval

Hi, all--

Having had hour meters on ag equipment previously, I was wondering why I should change our oil according to the odometer instead of the hourmeter.

What interval should I use?

Thanks...

M.

Dear tazo--

Thanks for the reply, however, I think possibly the link didn't work for me. I'll try it again later.

Link works for me.

It makes more sense to me to go by hours of operation rather than miles driven. The auto manufacturers probably prefer miles because then they don't have to spend the $$$ to put hour meters on the vehicles they sell.

So in a nutshell this is what it says.
1 hour = 33 miles
7500 mile service = 227 hours
5000 mile severe duty service = 152 hours

miles divided by 33 = engine hours

There is no magical mathmatical calculation to turn miles into hours. That 33miles in one hour can vary greatly on how fast your going and how your using your truck.

If you do a lot of idling, for example have a PTO to run something. The only accurate way I can see is to keep track of hours is to have an hour meter on the truck.

Dear tazo, dkf and texastech_diesel--

Thanks so much for the replies.

I should change my oil every 150 hours according to the hour meter, yes?

Mark

If you hit 150 hours before you hit 5000 miles, or 6 months, then yes change your oil every 150 hours.

Can you reset the engine hour on your dash? If so, how?

Wow, Mike-11,

I don't know if it's possible, but wouldn't that be like resetting the main odometer? How would you keep track of total engine hours?
