Cranky Compass

My compass is having some issues lately. It has been going into calibration mode for days on end and not responding to manual calibration (per owner's manual). Is there a "compass module" or something of the like that can be changed out? Perhaps my enormous carbon footprint is causing global polarity change...another reason to get the green tree-huggers upset. When the compass finally gets over the calibration and decides to work, it usually reverts to calibration mode within a day or so.

Have any of y'all seen your compasses develop Alzheimer's? This isn't a problem that I want to bug the techs over at the Ford dealership. Especially after they soaked me for $887 for new water pump. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

2003 F-250 Super Duty, 4-dr, (Has all accessories except heated seats and the power sliding window...otherwise loaded).

I have the EXACT same issue as you! I even found a place I could drive in circles. I followed the instructions in the manual and I drove around trying to calibrate it for 30 minutes. It wouldn't work. I am now used to not having the compass but it would be nice. Once in a great while it will show abnormal values on MPG and Temp for a while then goes back to normal. Mine started this after they unplugged the batteries to replaced the head gaskets.

Yep, they die after a few years. You need to replace the unit.

Or you can check all of the solider joints on the board and see what has come loose.

there is a small "box" that has two conectors, the buttons, and the display. I replaced it with one from a junk year, and it lasted about 6 months. the DIC functions work and I have a compass in the nav radio so I am now living with it.
