transmission interchange question
i have a 96 ford half ton pickup 4x4 with a 4.9 engine 5 speed manual transmisson. i am wondering if i can use a 3/4 ton transmission and is there a difference in the gear ratio between the 1/2 ton and the 3/4 ton transmissons?

you can used whatever will bolt to the engine, or bellhousing - couple ways to go.
that 5spd has an OD 5th gear. you might miss that if you get a 4spd, unless u get a 3spd+od, but then it will be wide ratio

It's likely you have the M5OD Mazda tranny, check the tranny code on your door pillar. The HD trucks came with the Zf 5-speed, it has a granny low first and is much stronger that the Mazda. If you find one from a truck with any of the small block motors(4.9/5.0/5.8) it will bolt to your motor, you will need a flywheel and clutch specific to your motor however and possibly a tranny mount and crossmember, so a donor vehicle with the same powertrain quickly becomes valuable.
