I have a few questions for you all. Im new to the forum. Im buying a 1993 Ford F-350 with the 7.3 IdI. I used to own a 1988 chevy with the 6.2 and was not very happy. I currently own a 1988 ford F-250 and have been pleased with the gasser I just have a love for diesels. Will the 7.3 be better than the dog 6.2 ? I plan on adding a turbo at a later date. It has a brand new jasper transmission and transfer case, and I getting the truck for 3000.00. So I think its a good deal.
6.2 has 130 hp with 240 lb torque (first year produced in 82)
6.2 has 143 hp with 257 lb torque (last year produced in 93)
7.3 has 180 hp with 360 lb torque
7.3 has 50 more hp and 120 lb feet torque more than the 6.2.(first year)
7.3 has 37 more hp and 103 lb feet more torque than the 6.2.(last year)
With an aftermarket banks tubo on the 6.2, it brings it up around what the 7.3 is without one. I will check my book today..
The 7.3 with a banks turbo has about 260 hp and over 500 lb feet torque. Big Difference
The 6.2 from what I read was just an alternatve to other gas engines for increased MPG. In fact they compared it to the 4.3 v6!!! The 6.2 and 6.5 engine was never meant to be a power and torque competitor with Ford/International and Dodge/Cummins, but rather a simply designed workhorse engine that made credible power and achieved then-decent fuel economy.
I got most of my info at Netscape Search
I've never owned a GM diesel but been around a few and I'd agree with Mega Cab.
I've been around a bunch of IDIs, pretty much my whole life, but didn't really know that much about them until I logged on here. I've only been on here for 6 months or something and there isn't much left on my two IDIs I'd be afraid to tackle.
I've been around Cummins since they came out ('89), actually A LOT around the Cummins and I think I know more about IDIs now than in 10 years or so of learning them.
Get a turbo when you can and it'll do anything you can reasonably expect a truck to do. Plus you can work on it yourself if you keep asking questions about it on here. Trust me it's time well spent.
Good to have you here and don't be afraid to ASK "dumb" questions, they save you from MAKING dumb mistakes.
I think a lot of times people are afraid to ask a "simple" question 'cause they think they should already know the answer because they're a "car guy".
That's why I logged on as Dodge/Cummins, if I ask too simple of a question they can just think: oh it's that dumb Dodge guy and then just answer it. LOL
Thank you for giving me permission to ask dumb questions (as I will due just that). I was a gm diesel tech for 2 years, but never could afford a duramax. And i have owned my ford gasser for 3 1/2 years now and it really been the best truck I've ever had. So i figure why not go for a ford diesel too. Now I own my own shop but dont know too much about the Ford IDI's. So I hope you all can learn me.

Hey my good buddy, old pal!
That's my web-site-butt-kissing act. You might come in handy for me to know.
I'm thinking of someday putting a 6.5L turbo diesel and maybe a 4L80E in my '70 GMC 4wd ext. cab.
But I'll send you messages about that when the time comes for me to start looking for a donor truck. I don't think the Ford faithful would appreciate that much "Chebbie" talk.
I'm definitely a MOPAR guy but I always say: you don't have to hate one to like the other. Every manufacturer has made crap and most have made gold too.

Like chryslers lean burn system
Other than that, As long as it rolls (and I aint pushing) it works for me.
I test drove a '98? I think it was GMC 2500 with the 6.5 turbo years ago.
I was really close to buying that truck, if it hadn't been out of my price range at the time. It was a very clean truck and I thought it ran great, felt like it had good power.
ok now that you guys are done makin out with each other time for some real info. my best friend USED to be a GM guy, now has cummins....better but one more step to go. he had a 6.2 and a 6.5T
i have a 7.3 idi ATS turbo.
ok..dont expect the 7.3 to mileage like the 6.2 or really the 6.5
next. expect to be able to pull something not like the 6.2, it can barely move itself.. although sadly i pulls comparible to a TBI 350
6.5T's were closer to the 7.3 non turbo, in power only though. they were only good for the 50k till they broke the crank,or ate the IP, and then when you went to fix them realized EVERY one of them has a cracked block AND cracked heads=new block
then you take your 7.3 and put an aftermarked turbo, whatever company you feel comfortable with, make around 15psi boost and destroy either one of them at whatever you want. and surprize the non chipped powerstroke guys. IDI's do have some "quirks" if you will, injector return lines, and o rings will need to be replaced at some point and sometimes the hats break off too. make sure you put the coolant additive in your cooling system to prevent block erosion. other than that... lots of good advice on here(idi forum) we even get the odd powerstroke guy comin over here to pick the brains of the knowledgable people over here.(not me)
