Laptop Interface

My buddy has a VW Jetta and he's able to hook up a laptop to it and mess around with the timing of the engine and get other information from the engine. Is there anything like this, where I can buy the cable to hook up my laptop to my truck, and get the software to do diagnostics and reset engine codes? I've looked but haven't been able to find anything other then standalone devices, which I don't want.

There are a few. Check out Autotap. They have software and the cables. They are pretty proud of their stuff though, so, don't be surprised at the cost.
