4WD Hubs

Big problems, I have a 99 f250 super duty diesel, broke the manual locking hubs, so i got some warn premiums and put them on yesterday, on the way home, whenever i hit a bump this grinding noise would occur, so i would pull the truck over and it would stop, either way made it home and took the hubs off, although the passenger side hub is now broken, and i can't get the back piece off of the spindle, also, i jacked the car up and took the tire off, the spindle moves all over the place, i know there should be play in it but i can move the whole u-joint?? (still learning about trucks) all over, did something break internally? did i kill my hubs? not really sure what i am looking at with the whole problem. any help would be much appreciated.

If the u-joint in the axle is moving more than about 1/4" in any direction you've probably got trashed bearings in the hub assembly that let the stub shaft wobble around, which in turn trashed your new hub. I hate to say it, but it sounds like you are in for a major repair bill

I know Ford Parts and Ford Diesel Parts at Powerstroke Shop has good prices on the unit hubs, but they aren't cheap... somewhere around $800 for the pair I think? But their kit includes all the needed parts to replace them (seals, O-rings, etc). as I recall.

Here are a couple links-

This one is for the hub assembly- you'd need two. If yours is an early bird you'll need to call them because these are the late model assemblies.

This one is for both hubs and all new u-joints for the front end. This is a GREAT value if you need the parts. Even if you don't and you have the $, this would basically give you a brand new front end that would last a long, long time.

This isn't that bad of a job, if you can run a jack and turn a ratchet you can do 98% of it yourself. The hard part is getting that huge seal onto the axle shaft and pressing the ball joints in/out if you need them- you'll want a press. When I did the ball joints on mine the dealer I bought all my parts from pressed the stuff in and out for me at no charge.
Where are you located? There are people on this forum scattered all over the place if you end up needing a hand. If you go to Welcome to guzzle's Ford PSD Web Page he has good write-ups that are very helpful.

Hard to say without being able to see it, but what part of the 4x4 hub is stuck on the stub shaft? Maybe you could thread some self-tapping screws into the broken piece and use a pry bar or puller to pop it out, or maybe you can shove a screwdriver through the big seal in the knuckle and push the broken hub out from the backside? It looks like a complicated job but it's really pretty easy as long as you have good hand tools- a long breaker bar is very helpful for getting the nuts off the back side of the unit hub. You also need a BIG socket or large crescent for the ball joint nuts if you're going that far.
