1996 OBD2 Data Port Problem
Hi Guys,
I just picked up a 96 F-150 Il6.
The check engine light is on so I ran out and bought an OBD2 Actron code reader.
The reader works on my Regal, and Caravan, but doesn't even acknowledge that it is hooked up to the Ford.
This truck was born 1/96. I know that is teh start of OBD2.
Has anyone else had an issue like this?
Thanks,
-Carl

Could be a blown fuse.Check fuses. I get Ford's in all the time with the CEL on and the fuse is blown. It could be the scanner too.

I thought code readers were brand specific?? My LATE '94 F150 with 5.0 HAS MASS AIR and the OBDII

I think you mean OBDI as the F150 5.0 did not go to OBDII until 1996.

OBD2 was impliemented on all vehicles manufacturerd 1/1/96 and later.
Most manufacturers started in 1995.
And there are cheaper code readers that are manufacturer specific, but I have a universal reader that reads all OBD2 cars and light trucks.
I have not checked the fuses yet, but anyone else have any suggestions?

Does the scanner even "come to life" when you plug it in? If not, check for raw power to the connector. There should be +12VDC (-ish) at pin 16, and pin 4 should be continuous with ground.

I agree that it's probably a fuse.
No 1994 F-150 sold in this country had OBD-II from the factory.

It was the "Cigar" fuse which also covers the data port.
Thanks for the tip.

As Freud once said, "Sometimes a Cigar fuse isn't just a Cigar fuse...."

Yes, I have the dreaded p0171 and p0174.
I did some minor repairs to take care of it.
So far I cleaned the MAF, looked over all the vaccum lines, and changed the fuel filter.
I cleared the code and see what happens from there.
The front o2 is fairly new, so I will change them last. I might even just go with a spoof for the o2's.
