tire psi question?

I am going on a 800 mile trip this weekend. An I have 35X13.50X20 procomp X treme tirs on my truck. I run them with 35psi, but was wandering if I should air them up a little for the trip I will be going on? I was thinking about 45psi to help with the gas milage. I dont want to air up to much but I did not think 45psi would hert.Thanks Tim

I like to run my tires at 10% less than the maximum PSI they're rated for unless I'm carrying a very heavy load.

Well it won't hurt anything, ride might be a bit harsher is about all, but with those tires it can't be great anyway.

Just remember.....

Fast=heat
Heat=more psi
More psi=domed center

Put too much air in there and your 800 mile trip might take a couple of thousand miles off of the center

Stick with Ron W. and yer good

PSI, Wear, Heat, mileage

Remember, too low pressure will produce rapid wear on the edges of the tread and result in greater sidewall flexing which produces more heat which reducess tire life and ply seperation. Better to run at the upper end of the MAX PSI rating than the lower end. A higher pressure will give you better fuel mileage as well as better tire wear but you will feel the road bumps to a greater extent.

Rim vs tire width must also be factored. A slightly wider rim will have less affect on wearing out the center than on a narrower rim for the same tire size. Higher pressure usually results in less heat in the tire. Up to a point. When tire contact with the road suffers. Be it bouncing or limited patch contact. Then heat will rise due to slippage with the road surface. As Thomas pointed out, low pressure running (below spec) is more critical than higher. Your vehicle weight must be factored to pressure as well.

I usually add for trips - but I am always carrying more junk when I travel...
