Being a little paranoid about my coolant temps recently, I picked up a new water pump, 195 degree t-stat, lower radiator hose and some Rotella ELC. Brandon (bdrummonds) came over Friday night and we replaced the coolant sensor during my 20 gallon of distilled water drain-fill-drive-drain-fill-drive flush process. During the last flush-drive, the new sensor gave the same temps as the old one(217 degrees empty). We then decided that we should sit down and think about it over several beers. We came to the conclusion that I should change out the 203 t-stat in the morning first and see what results I get.
Well, Saturday morning came along with the wind and rain from TS Fay. 30-40mph gusts with rain, it wasn't the best to do this! With the truck under the carport, I proceed with the t-stat removal...and one of the three bolts holding my billet t-stat housing broke off! There wasn't enough threads to grab with vise grips, so...my t-stat removal turned into a water pump R&R.
I had already rented the fan removal tools from Auto Zone, so I was good to go. After watching Mountain's You-Tube video, the process was very straight forward and alot easier than I thought. I did loose a 10mm socket into the mysterious void of the engine bay, I looked for a good hour with no results. The only PITA was getting the new lower radiator hose back on! The new CarQuest water pump came with a 90 degree angle adapter for the lower radiator hose connection that was slightly larger in diameter than the new hose. The stock water pump had a straight adapter. Anyone run into this?
I trimmed the new hose to accomidate the 90 degree adapter and with some elbow grease and some PB Blaster I got the hose to stretch enough to get a clamp on.
I took it for a long and hard test drive today, no leaks and the most I could get the temps to was 205 degrees(at 85 degree ambient).
Has anyone ran into this with a new water pump with the different outlet adapter? Where did you find the correct lower radiator hose?
Do you by chance remember the part number for the fan removal tool fron AZ?? I am going to be doing my pump this week and would rather rent the right tool than try something stupid to get the fan off. Thanks!
PS: We had TS Fay go through here last week as well....lots of flooding but luckely we didn't get flodded out of our house like some did!
When i changed all my radiator hoses I ended going to the steelership to get them. I had taken them off and took them to the Oreileys with me and they could not match them up. So off to the steeler I went and they needed the VIN to get the right ones!
Mike, yes...he is a good friend indeed!
Supercab, just ask for the universal FORD clutch fan removal kit, $54 to rent here.
I may have to with the stealership and see if they carry the right lower hose. I'll ask about the different water pump outlet designs while I'm at it. Thanks guys.
I bought the Airtex pump off ebay and it had the same fittings/pipes as the original. I still actually have the old pump & extension tube laying around the garage, so if you want/need the extender I'll send it out to you. It'll need a good scrubbing (and gasket of course) but it's yours if you want it.
OK, I got the low down on my pump and hose situation. I have an Airtex manufactured water pump from CarQuest, it has a 90 degree lower radiator hose connection flange, instead of the "straight" OEM flange. The Airtex flange is slightly larger in diameter than the "straight" OEM connection flange. Because of this, the OEM lower radiator hose will not fit properly. There is an "alternate" lower radiator hose that takes this into account and fits the replacement Airtex water pump. Goodyear part# 62286 or CarQuest part# 22434(which I believe is a Gates hose). The parts woman cross-referenced the Goodyear part number and found that she had the equivilant one in stock. She physically compared it with the picture from the Goodyear website and fitted it on to an Airtex pump flange they had in stock...it's the same and it fits like a glove! I'll be picking it up this afternoon.
Thanks Brendan for the offer! Thanks everyone for your input! Reps to everyone unless I have to spread it around first!
By the way, the water pump I have is the same one on ebay, part# AW4114 that's sold by Northern Auto Parts. That's who I called and found out about the Goodyear alternate lower radiator hose part number that needs to be used with this water pump. The guy was very friendly and answered all my questions and was very helpful. I should have bought from them, they're cheaper! Hope this helps anyone in the future.
