The last time I had to open the 8.8" differential on my Mustang, I don't think I used a gasket when I closed it back up; just RTV sealant. But I guess a gasket can't hurt.

Ford hasn't ever used a gasket (at least within the past few decades) on axle covers. They prefer a grey-colored silicon sealant, which they use everywhere it seems. I'm not sure what it is, but its tougher to scrape off then Permatex...

That chart is useful, though, for visually picking out a 7.5" from an 8.8" axle, or otherwise trying to ID them. Note that the 8.8" has a square cover with round corners, whereas the 7.5" is only flat on the top and bottom, and full-rounded on the sides. Helpful to someone looking for an upgrade or possibly someone that wants to figure out what their van has so they can purchase appropriate parts...

The 9" diff from my 1969 Mustang had a gasket, so I installed one when I closed it back up.

The grey RTV sealant from Permatex says it provides more structural strength than "regular" RTV. It definitely sets up harder than the regular stuff.
