Wow that sucks, I did brakes for a friend a few yrs ago that were so thin on one side that the rotor broke as I took it off. The slide pin was rusted and caused the caliper to stick, so that means everybody lubricate that pin every time you do the brakes.
When I need brakes I will be upgrading all the way around with those slotted rotors. I won't need those anytime soon though.
Update and a question- I decided to be my cheap azz self and went and bought a rotor, caliper, and pads from Napa. The caliper came with a small packet of silicone lube for the slide pins, should I use this stuff or just swab some good old fashioned bearing grease on them? They have a light coat of something on there already but definitely need something more.
Fair 'nuff, there's just not much there and I really, really don't want to have to deal with hanging slide pins in another month because they weren't greased enough.
Are you sure it's for the slide pins? They sometimes include a lube to put on the metal surfaces of the pads where it contact the calipers to prevent squeaking.
That could be what it's for... too late now though! The parts counter guy said it was for slide pins... I guess I could pull the caliper back off and smudge some on there... it goes a lot further than I thought it would.
Stupid question #2- trying to get greasy finger prints off of the rotor and I'm out of brake cleaner, what to use- I have wax/adhesive remover, contact cleaner, WD-40, gasoline?
I'd be using the gasoline.... I just redid the brakes all around on the 2002 excursion, rebuilt calipers, rotors, and pads,,,all 4 wheels done for about $650 in parts. One of my rotors looked kinda like yours on the inside, but my pins were free. don't skimp the brakes....you surely miss them when they are gone.
hey call advance auto i think they quoted me 66 for new rotors. and i took my brakes apart last night my e brake cable snaped replaced the broken one pedal was sticky so did the rest of them adjusted the parking brake and got done still didnt grab anyone had this happend i guess next step is to take apart the parking brake
E-brakes are touchy on these trucks from what I hear, they aren't quite adequate to hold the truck in all situations. I don't care much because I have an auto and very rarely need to use it. Advance Auto? We don't have that out here in Podunk I went to Napa and got the parts I needed, going to finish the reassembly/bleeding tomorrow and rotate tires.
I also agree that the emergency brakes on these trucks absolutely suck at holding the truck itself, much less the truck with a trailer attached to it. I have the notion to put on a line-lock to the rear brakes kinda like the drag racers use on the fronts to do burnouts. DON'T USE gasoline, paint thinner (Acetone is OK) or WD-40 to clean your rotors. Brake cleaner is best. Todd
