I was given a 302 but i'm not sure of the year. They said it may be a 77 or 78. I've got the Edelbrock manifold, cam & lifters, and 4 barrel carb for the 302. I plan on putting it in my 72 F100. I've ported the heads and manifold and took all the burrs out. Everything is together and ready to put in but they said it wouldn't run right if it's not a 302 made in the later years. It didn't have any emissions assesssories when i got it. I just want it to give a little HP. I hope i didn't waste my time and labor doing all that work and it doesn't proform right.
What did you do with compression, cam and valvetrain? If you just put those parts on a '70s shortblock, you may not get the results you were hoping for. Will this be subject to emissions testing?
I milled the heads 10,ported them i then got the power package from edelbrock. It came with manifold, cam, lifters, and carb. I don't have worry about emissions here in Florida. It should have alittle getup. I got the 600cfm electric choke carb. I lived across a auto parts house that did alot of machine work for Marine Motors and racers. They showed me how to port and polish and get all the burrs smooth. It took alot of patience and time but it was fun. Building motors back then wasn't like todays. I like the gas, spark, combustion. Not to smart on these new motors.
Thanks 85e150six4mtod i still got alot to go before it get on the road. I'm just wanting to hear the nice lopping sound and high revs. I miss all the muscle in the motors. It wont pass very many service stations.
Well, if you are going to work on the heads, get the teflon seals. The stock neoprene jobs start to crack and leak the first time the engine warms up....
Not sure how your rockers are mounted and if screw-in studs apply to your heads, but if they do, do it. And consider some aftermarket roller rockers that are actually all the same ratio. (as opposed to the stock cast ones that vary if what I heard when building my 289 is true)
This engine will easily spin to 7000 rpm, so the springs are important. Even though your power peak will probably be 5500 or so, over-revs happen and good springs are a little insurance.
With the right gearing and propper jetting (not leaking and running rich and loading up at idle etc) you should be able to make it squeek out decent mpg's when light on the load pedal.
