If I switch to using one of those so called high mileage oils will it help my rear main seal leak in my 1973 F-100 with 360 engine? Has anyone tryed this type of oil? The engine has 180,000 miles with nothing done.
You can use a heavier weight oil to buy you some time but it's only masking the the real problem, you'll eventually need to change out that rear main seal.
There are a couple of company's that make additives that advertise to help rear main seals.
I have tried both on two different trucks and both times they worked. But as soon as you change oil the leaking starts back immediately and maybe even worse. It states on the label that it does not always work and the cost of bottle each oil change is a little expensive. I think its just a short term solution but worth a try.
Leon, do us both a favor and ask about replacing your rear seal on the "FE" forum. :)
Pointy question...
Are you trying for some kind of record on that engine mileage? :)
I got mine overhauled at 148K and since then it is so sealed up and wastes
so little oil I can use Mobil1 15W-15 and not have to add oil for 7000 miles.
(usually go 6,000 tho)
It could never have done that since it was brand new.
The valve seals were crap right from the start! :/
Also, the engine has more power -and- gets better gas mileage than it ever did! :)
...252/252 CompCam, Edelbrock chain'n'sprockets and hard valve seat inserts added.
I've got a light duty 87 F250 with a 5.0L V8. The truck has 260,000 on the original engine ( never rebuilt ) . I run Valvoline max life and Lucas oil additive in it. The combination has helped slow down the leaks quite a bit. The engine uses/loses 1/2 a quart between oil changes.
Good chance you have the old fashioned rope seal, if it truly is factory. They have a pin holding the halves in place, so they won't slip out. The newer style rubber seals-before the one piece new stuff, can usually slide out.
From what I remember.
"ford", me and Leon are talkin'bout old clunky "Ford-Edsel" FE engines,
...not newfangled whizzbang 5.0's.

I know he was talking about a FE. But he asked about high mileage oils. I was just giving my opinion of the oil I'm running in my engine. "4x4 Bart" was the one that said something about a one piece seal.
Leon if you are changing your oil anyways what would it hurt to try the high mileage oil? If it doesn't fix the leak it may atleast slow it down enough so you could live with it until you can replace the seals. But that's just my opinion. Just stay away from a full synthetic motor oil.
