Another leaf spring question...

Well, I'm getting ready to put my leaf springs (rear) back together - the auxiliary springs "donated" a couple to replace my broken ones. On another thread, someone mentioned NOT to paint between the leafs. I plan on using the "liners", but can't think of a good reason not to paint them. Can anyone elaborate? I am planning on painting them with Chassis Saver, which is VERY slick, and VERY durable. With the liners, I just don't see a problem....

Thanks in advance,

R

There isn't a problem if you use the liners. The problem with painting leafs is that the paint just rubs off and the leafs squeak. The liners fix that, although you will still probably rub off some paint given enough time.

Thanks, all! That's pretty much what I figured. A bit more sandblasting, and I'll be ready to begin putting them back together.

Just got mine back together. I painted them with Chassis Saver. I used a grinder with a wire wheel to take the big stuff off then blasted them. Didnt use the liners but will probably install later when cab and box are on and see how it sits. May take a leaf out.

I painted mine and didnt use any liners. I found a really nice set of original springs for mine. A friend actually found them for me. All the original paint was still there. I just cleaned them up and put some fresh on.

I not only painted mine but I painted them with POR-15 even between the leaves. I have yet to see any problem with them and it sure keeps the rust down...

Thanks Vern! Even more affirmation!

The Chassis Saver is basically the same soup as the POR-15, so I'm sure I'll be alright. The rust is the main issue, I want to try to keep to a minimum. These ARE 57 year old used springs, after all.

When I'm done, I might go ahead and pull my fronts apart again, and do it to them...but maybe not - if they go, I'll probably replace them - hopefully, financially, it will be more feasible then.
