Hey guys heres the scenario a buddy off mine rear end is needing some repair. His rear end was making nasty noises an clunks so he new something was wrong. After removing the rear cover he seen the damage. The pinion gear is stripped an bearing shot. This truck has a lift on it an is running 35s on it. He pulls pretty good loads with it quite a bit. Im thinkin with 4.10 gears he has an tryin to turn those big tires with a load its a bit much for the rear to take. My question is this what should he do next. I dont want his to happen to him again. Give me your input here guys. Any or all ideas welcome. Thanks a lot for the help guys in advance its really apreciated. Given that the stock tires on a Superduty are usually around 31-32 inches, that means for a 35" tire, given he has 4.10s now, that means he'd have to go to 4.56's to get back to the stock gearing.
However, with 35's, he's still near a 3.73 effective gearing, which is another stock gear ratio that comes in the Superduty.
I can't see any excessive loads causing the rear to go bad like that.
I suspect the gear oil might have been contaminated with water, or just plain leaked out and caused the problem.
If he has the money to do both front and rear gears (is it 4x4?) go to 4.56's, or even 4.88's, and he'll be much happier pulling those loads.
But I don't think the load itself caused the rear to grenade
When I did my my figuring, 4.56 got you closer to 4.10 stock gearing with 35" tires. That is for gas though, roughly 2000rpms at 60mph with 4.56 gears and 35s.
Have the whole rear rebuilt with at least 4.56 gears and quality bearings. Then get a higher volume diff cover, the extra fluid will help keep the rear cooler. Use a good fluid, and follow the breaking procedure the installer recommends.
