Alright finally got around to it and odered up some 5.13 gears for my truck. Got the rear end taken care of no problems. Before i took the front apart, i had already ordered/recieved a 3.92 up d44 carrier. Well i get my front end torn down..and it has the dana/spicer trac-loc. Which means the carriers are different. I'd prefer keeping the trac-lok since i already have it now. Now...this is my first front axle gear install. Can someone explain to me why i need a 3.73-up carrier because i just cant see why the 5.13's would not work with the one i have now(the truck had 3.55). The ring gear bolts to it fine... can you tell the difference between a 3.73 -down and a 3.73-up? Is it possible i already have the 3.73 up?
I went through this on a friend of mines (forgive me)10 bolt under a 73 Nova. You need a different carrier, the higher geared stock carrier is putting the ring gear too far away from the pinion.
There are a few options for you, either suck it up and use the new open carrier, get a different r&p set with a thicker ring gear (will put the ring gear closer to the pinion where it needs to be), or get a ring gear spacer that does the same as the thicker ring gear but I would think that strength would be an issue using a spacer between the carrier and ring gear.
Bite the bullet and order up an ARB locker for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know easy for me to say, but I can spend your money with the best of them!!! Good luck with whatever path you choose.
x2 with unrulee
the space between the pinion and ring gear is different with the different carriers
Thats why you need the different carrier or the ring and pinion wont meet
If you want to keep the carrier you have you simply need thick cut gears to make up for the difference
