removing engine

Is there a manual anywhere on removing a 6.9 fully intact, tranny and all? Can it be done? want to do a complete overhaul on both trany and engine, but dont want to do so while in the truck.

judging from the posts from others who have pulled engines, it can be done, but it's gonna be a bear. the engine's been out of my truck in the past before i got it and from the looks, they cut the radiator frame/mount so everything could be pulled out the front. be aware this is a monster to lift. don't know what the combination weighs, but a 7.3 weighs somewhere over 800 pounds. i'm betting some of the guys that have pulled engines will post advice and helpful hints. the only thing i know to do that would be considered even moderately easy is to cut the rad. frame/mount so it all slides forward. hope this helps.

The engine with all its accesories alone will weigh closer to 1200 lbs. Be sure to use a engine lift and a engine stand that has the proper capacity for this weight.

Whether you decide to pull both out together, or even just the motor, remove the hood, that gives you more clearance and you dont even have to think about hitting it.

Pull the engine, leave the tranny(prop it up on blocks before you remove engine), then just unbolt driveshaft and tranny mount and get the tranny out .

The fan needs to come off first , pull radiator , pull off your pullys, and it helps to remove the exhaust manifolds... then you can pull the engine, make sure you have a good hoist and eng. stand--- I have a 1200# stand and the eng. tillts a lot...

I pulled my engine out with the tranny atached. it was a pain you really gotta get the frotn of the motor to aim up hill from the back by the time you start getting it out. Also i didn't have fenders or radiator support on my truck whenever i did it. But all in all it wasn't to bad. did bent a caster on my engine picker whenever i picked it but that was no biggie. couple hours from star tto finish and was done.

Unless you remove the radiator shell, there is no way you can pull the tranny with the engine.

After the engine slides off the tranny input shaft and you start raising it, you have to turn the engine about 45 degrees so the harmonic balancer clears the radiator shell.

This would be impossible with the tranny attached.

Plus if you could get it out, that much weight as high as it would have to be to clear the radiator shell with the tranny hanging down, would be very scarry.

I HIGHLY suggest doing this:

It's actually alot less work than it looks to be, you can pull the whole clip in one piece with about 10-12 bolts....

If you want to pull the tranny and motor as one unit, that is about what I would do as well.

Keeping the oil pan within 3 feet of the ground is a lot safer than 5 feet off the ground.

Much easier to jump sideways three feet than it is five feet if something goes wrong.

do as stated before pull the motor then the tranny alot less headaches even with taking the front clip off. it would be the difference in buying a 500 dollar cherry picker and a 700 dollar sliding I-beam celing lift

I agree with everybody that said drop tranny out the bottom.
I used a really good cherry picker to pull a 440 which weighs a bit more than HALF of an IDI and getting it over the radiator support was SPOOKY!
BTW they weigh roughly 1000#.
