How many miles was on the tranny and how many miles was it since the last flush? Just curious.
102k on the truck and I assume the tranny. Had two previous owners and maintenance record is unknown. Allegedly the fluid was changed right before I purchased the truck last year with 93k miles on it. The fluid looked nice and pink (and smelled unburnt) when I inspected it during the purchase process. JW tells me to change the fluid (he uses synthetic Lubrication Engineers) every 15k miles and I will follow his recommendation. I plan on keeping my 7.3 for quite a while. Love my truck.
In closing, I cannot say how much I recommend John Wood for his transmissions especially if you live on the West Coast. The guy bent over backwards for me and took right good care of our situation. I am certainly in debt to him.
Aint JW great?
Too bad you didn't have a chance to kick it with him at his shop and pick his brain. He's good people.

My wife is the same way. She loves all the mods I've done to her Excursion, and she loves the way it pulls our Sundowner 4-horse bumper-pull!
Apparently so. I thought he used Swepco also according to what I had previously read. The Lubrication Engineers stuff is almost $10 a quart individually; a case of 24 can be had for about $190. Seems it is the best stuff around.
I read my wife my long-winded post last night (she fell asleep). But she did point out that I provided the wrong route information. We actually took US 95 to NV/CA 266 which turns into CA 168 and that is where that crazy hill starts. The place where we broke down was actually Big Pine (not Lone Pine although the two are somewhat close to each other).
I had a vacation-killing tranny experience also. Not fun sitting on the side of a mountain with a dead truck, upset wife, crying kids, only 5 beers in the trailer frig... etc.
On edit: We were able to submit our towing bill to our auto insurance and they paid it in full. Some sort of clause in our policy that has a towing reimbursement in it. Might be worth a phone call
wow, sorry to hear about an ruined vacation but with the tranny you have now you will never have another ruinedone (at least due to a tranny!!) Too bad there isnt a John Woods down here in Texas.

My only problem with this thread/post is the title. That trans flush procedure works very well. I have done it. During a search, folks may feel that this is not the way to go when it is very effective. I give it 2 thumbs up.
If your tranny fluid did not smell burned up, then it was either burned up prior or it was not burned up at all. Glad you have a bullet proof unit now.
