Unhappy Problem with controls mounted on steering column

1996 Extended Cab 4X4 Auto 4.0

In the last 2 years have started having problem with headlights. Initial problem was no low beams after switch was turned on. After checking fuses and scratching head I tried high beams & all started working again. It seems as though there is a spot where the turn signal, high/low control arm makes no electrical contact. It has reached the point where every time the lights are turned on, you have to hit the brights to get the low beam to come on. And once they are on, you can now move the arm forward / back and find the spot where it loses contact.

Along with cruise, horn, lights, turn signals, wipers, washer & airbag I was afraid of how many wires were going to crammed into a very small place. Sounds like a perfect place to make a small problem into a very costly one.

My questions are:
  • would an electric contact cleaner help?
  • is there a replaceable assembly connected to the signal arm?

Looks like the multifunction switch is shot, but before i spent 50 bucks on a new switch iwould test it first.

Best bet for fixing this and your next electrical problem is to purchase the 1996 Ranger "electrical & vacuum troubleshooting manual" from helminc.com for 30 bucks.

This manual will show you how to test the dimmer circuit in the switch. VERY SIMPLE to do.
