The Repair Manuals Thread reminded me of a question I couldn't find an answer for in my manuals.
Does anybody know what size fuse the dome light/cigar lighter takes? It's one of the really short ones, and the most amps I can find that lenght in is 7 amps. I think it needs more than that because of the draw of the cigar lighter, which I use--then it pops! I just can't find how many amps it needs in my books. I've also had a hard time trying to find an old glass fuse in that length that is above 7 amps.
I find em at checker theyre in a clear plastic box and it has about ten of em at different lengths I bought one for my truck cause I needed a 15 and a 20 and they were both in there. If you cant find em then just put a 30A fuseable link on the spades on that fuse. Thats what I do when im out on the road and one breaks on me and I dont have another. But you should be able to find em If checker dont have em usually napa or autozone will.

Yea, I've found plenty of the glass fuses in the little boxes, but the variety packs don't have higher amp fuses in the littly shorty lengths. A buddy of mine that's a mechanic says i prolly just needed a higher amped fuse that will fit that slot.
Kinda like you said, I'm thinking of just getting one of those little kits that lets you wire a flat fuse into the old box.
Kit-Schmitt.... all you have to do is wedge the flat fuse in beside the clip that would have held the old bus-style fuse. A bit ghetto, but very effective.

Do NOT do this. It is a fire hazard to go up in fuse size. It's safe to go down in fuse size, you just will blow them more easily. You cannot go up in fuse size. Ford installs fuses based on the gauge of the wire used and the safe current capacity of the wiring. A fuse is rated based on the weakest element in the circuit. If you go up in fuse size, you are allowing the circuit to pass higher than the maximum amount of rated current, which will heat up the wiring excessively in the event of a short which could lead to a fire.
I say this because I can't quite remember the fuse rating for that circuit, but I know it's less than 30. That is why a 30 amp is not safe. I'm pretty sure it's actually 15 amps, but you should double check elsewhere to be sure.
Its not a kit its a resetable breaker it has two wires comin out of it and you put spade connectors on them then buy the fuse for that link put it in the link then hook one side up to positive and one to negative on the fuse that blown out and it will work. Or just get a cb power cord and cut out the fuse on it and wire that up the same way.
every book I looked in says it takes a 15 amp fuse. even my '79 bronco has a 15 amp fuse in its fuse block. if your blowing 15 amp fuses there is a problem, is there anything else hooked into the circuit?? maybe cab marker lights??, check your wiring for bare spots and or shorted areas. good luck -RW

This is the "Industry" number marked on the fuse which is glass, and will be available from any parts store.
IAG-15 is not a Ford part number.
There is no circuit breaker listed for the dome light/cigarette lighter.
Ford did not use plastic "spade" type fuses in F100/350's till the 1980's.
1973/79: The fuses are GLASS!
That's what I wanted to know! The fuse it calls for from the factory. FMC400, you're right, and I would never want to go above that for safety reasons. I just wanted to know what it calls for so that I did not put one in there that is too "big".
What I found and have been running in there is 7 amp. A buddy told me it should probably take 15 amps, which Number Dummy, Rebel Warrior and FMC confirmed. I just haven't been able to find a fuse in the proper length at 15 amps. I also had a hard time finding what it calls for in the books I have. maybe I'm not looking hard enough! I know it runs the dome light just fine, but as soon as you push in the mini electric stove that is the cigar lighter it pops. Maybe a sign I should quit smoking!
Thanks for all the feedback, guys. I know what I have to find now! As long as I can get the old glass fuses, I'm going to stick with them rather than wire something else in.

Finding the correct fuse is as EZ as making an 800 phone call.
This is the Ford part number.
D6TZ14526A .. Fuse ~ 1AG-15 / The fuse is no longer available from Ford, but...
greensalescompany.com has 25 of the little darlin's: 800-543-4959.
Thanks again Bill. I WILL remeber this thread because I had such a hard time finding these things here in my area in the proper lenght--also, before this thread I wasn't 100% sure of the amps I needed. After checking today though, I ran to a local parts store at lunch and they had them! I picked up a six-pack!
You could probably ask your parts house for an AGA 15 glass fuse. It should be the correct length. I live in a town of 2500 people and our partshouse has them in stock.
