Hey guys I feel so dumb!
The other night my truck needed a jump start. I found A guy who said he would so I got out my jumper cables and hooked them up (BACKWARDS)! My cables are not marked good and it was dark to boot. Anyway I figured it out and installed them correctly. when I got home I changed all the blown fuses and installed a new battery.
Now I had my alternator and my voltage regulator checked, they are OK but my alt is overcharging (16 volts). I checked the alt bulb in the dash and it is good(I pulled it out of the dash and made sure). When I turn on the key(with the motor off) the light does not come on.
Should'nt it come on? Also isn't there a resistor that is in parallel with that bulb? Could this be why my alt is overcharging?
Any advice would be appreciated
Matt
It should come on. Check and make sure no wires were burnt in two at the reg. One side of the light is hooked to 12v from the keyswitch. The other end is hooked to the "I" terminal of the regulator. You are right about the resistor too. Take the plug off the regulator, and take a short piece of wire and jump the "I" terminal to a good ground with the keyswitch on but the truck not running. The dash light should light. If it doesn't, you need to investigate the bulb wiring. If it does light when you ground the "I" terminal, it would have to be the regulator, even though they said it was good. The regulator detects current from the alt and turns the light off.
