need help on brakes

Hi I have a 1977 F-150, 2 WD, 302 engine, power brakes, 4 speed trans. The problem is the truck has no brake pedal to speek of when you push down on the brake it goes all the way to the floor it will stop you. But to have any kind of pedal you have to pump the pedal a few times to get a ferm feel on the pedal.

I have changed the mater cylinder 4 times and bench bleed it,the two front calipers and the rear wheel cylinder 2 times. I have changed the brake booster and it does hold vacuum.Bleed all the lines several times.new brakes all the way around.

Does any body have any ideas on what is wrong with these brakes? Any body run in to this problem before? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Rory

Are you pulling the little pin on the brake distribution block assembly while you are bleeding the brakes?

Man it sure sounds like the rear brakes need to be adjusted! I know it has new brakes, but are you sure the adjusters are installed correctly and did you run them up to the drums after they were installed? The fact that the pedal goes all the way to the floor sounds like the shoes are having to travel too far before they make contact with the drums. I don't think the booster will have anything to do with the travel, just the effort.

You need to isolate the problem. Put line locks on both brake hoses and also the rear. Now see if you have a firm pedal if no then the problem will be in the upper hydrolics (master, booster, prop valve, etc) If you do have a good firm pedal then remove your locks from each hose one at a time to see which wheel is giving you problems.

Also did you mean that you replaced the master cylinder with 4 different ones?

When you have the Emergency brake locked down is there less travel in the pedal?

You should try Tom's isolation method, otherwise you're going to be chasing your tail.

Did you have the front calipers off?? or just bleed them. They could be stuck and are no longer floating on the mount. If this were so , you will never ever get good pedal because they piston would always be travelling to for before it reaches the rotor surface give you a long pedal stroke. This was more common in chevs but it could be you trouble. Good luck.

Compressorguy has allready given you the answer. You're brakes are out of adjustment. You're brakes (Drum Type) are not adjusted out enough. That's why you're pedal gets better when being appied a few times........

If the rear brakes are out of ajustment then the e-brake would go all the way to the floor would it not?

Brakmen were do you get a line lock and were would it go on the brake line?

Thanks Rory
