I have the stock fixed towing mirrors on my '99. These do not telescope like later models, they are fixed in extended position. They work fine for the most part.
On my previous tow vehicle, I had a set of McKesh mirrors that had additional convex round mirrors mounted on the arms - they fit between the main mirror and door. I miss these, as they were wonderful for seeing what the rear truck wheels were doing when backing the trailer into tight spots. Also good for seeing the curb when parallel parking.
Before I break out the tools and fabricate a clamp, does anyone know of an already existing clamp on mirror? 4" or 5" would be OK, I would prefer they clamped onto the lower arm of the stock mirrors.
I agree that they are great when backing...but there is a draw back of the additional wind noise.
I didn't think about that when I ordered mine. Even with the window up, the added wind noise is notable. As long as that's not a major factor for you then go for them. It took me all of about 15 minutes to mount them.
It'll help to have somebody help you adjust them as you lock the mirror into what ever position you want using three screws. It's helpful to have someone adjust the mirrors and tighten the screws while you sit in the seat to make sure they don't shift until the screws are tightened.
