I am less inclined to believe mine is piston or lifter as it does not seem to do it with a slow acceleration test, only a quick push acceleration test.

The verdict is in: I had 2 broken studs and a cracked manifold. Apparently the tech had already gotten started on R&R the manifold, so it looks like I missed the boat on going with the route of shorty headers.

I had a warped manifold that made my 06 F150 sound a bit like a diesel (slight exaggeration) but it sounded pretty rough. It was like rattling a pebble in a tin can) it got a bit better as it warmed up but was always there.
When I took it in I wondered if this was the right diagnosis. It turns out that it was partially corrected by planing the manifold to straighten it out and reinstalling it. When I picked my truck up I was happy that the sound seemed to be gone. Then I got it home to my garage, the sound now is much less but I can faintly hear what sounds like a little mis-firing. So a manifold leak seems to amplify the sound of something underlying....of course it would!
I will change my plugs (needed anyhow), check the timing and repost later!!!
