Temp Guage, Works sometimes

I have a 95 PSD 4WD XLT. The temp guage will work only after the engine has reached full operating temperature. My first thought was the sensor is bad so I changed the sensor. Same problem.... I had the truck in the dealers shop the other day getting a gear kit put in my drivers side electric window and asked them to check it out. They did ground the sensor wire to the negitive post of the battery to see if the gauge would max out. It would not move off cold so the dealer says it's the gauge. (It's only $140.00 for a new one) Problem is I don't think the gauge is bad. It does work when the engine is at operating temp. I think it is a connection problem somewhere in the wiring harness since the gauge works at operating temp and not work even grounded with the engine cool.

Anybody ever had a problem like this or know what connections that I can check?

Thanks, Sam

You could do the old "take it apart and put it back together" thing on the dash and see if it fixes it. You would be surprised, how many things I have fixed by just taking it apart, looking everything over carefully, and then putting it back together. It could be a loose connection somewhere, that makes contact when the metal swells up when it is warm. If you happen to mess with this while you are taking it apart, the problem might go away.
