Hello,
My daughter is now old enough to drive. Our 1996 F150 is acceptable for her to drive but the radio is caput. I have removed it, and now need a replacement. Walmart has an AM/FM cd player that also has an Ipod conection.....She would like that! How hard is it to put in is the big question. I have successfully installed a remote starter in our van without serious injury, so I think I may be up for this. (ignorance is bliss)
Any advice?
I bought one of the cheap vr3 players that also takes SD cards and Thumb drives. They have a wireless remote that is OK to about ten feet, but it needs line of sight to work. I bought one for about 70 bucks almost two years ago to put in my boat (always in the saltwater) and it has held up so well that I put one in the truck as well. Your daughter will probably like the ability to play 2 gigs of mp3 music without having to carry 30 CD's around. Last I checked they are around 80 bucks now. Kurt
get removal tool. (for those who do not already have radio out)
get wiring adapter.
get electrical tape.
less than a 1/2 hour job.
make sure she removes the faceplate every time she leaves the vehicle.
x2 on everything except the electrical tape part. Use crimp connectors instead. More reliable connection, and it won't get all bunched up when you try to push the deck back in.

On the other hand, I put the AMFM Cass 'road king' in my tractor and it lasted one summer. So after a quiet year I got the AMFMCD road king and is seems to have issues.
Of course, it could be the brutal tractor environment (it is in the cab under the roof so its not like it is getting rained on)
I am less than enthralled with walmart brand radios (durabrand?) (aka built by chinese slave labor 14 hours before their organs are donated to wealthy europeans.)
This is a fairly easy 30 minute job. You do not need the mounting kit. I used one becuase it looks better. Definitly use the adapter that allows you to plug into your factory wiring. I like soldering and heat shrinking them. Another cool connector is a Posi Lock. They look sort of link the crimp connectors but use little threaded nuts instead and are reusable. I hate the crimp connectors, since they always seem to come apart.
I have a 95 F-150 xl and I tried to put in a Sony radio using this guide, I am haveing problems getting a constant power wire. I have checked all my fuses and come up with nothing, but for some reason I'm not getting constant from Green/Purple
