Ranger buying question

I'm looking at buying a Ranger, a dealership has two of them for the same price. One is a 1996 XLT extended cab 2wd 3.0L with 88,000 miles for $3,995. The other one is a 1999 XLT extended cab 4wd 4.0L with 119,000. Does the price for the 99 model seem too low in price? I only got to look at them as it was Sunday and the dealership is about an hour from where I live. They are both in good shape neither one has any dents or even a lot of scratches. The insides looked good as well nothing torn. Is the 4wd drive too good of a deal because I was kind of wanting a 4wd. What things should I look for? Sorry for the long post.

No to 3.0!

4.0 will offer better performance with just a little less MPGs.

Try to look for a truck with less miles on the odometer!

Although the 4000.00 maybe ballpark for a 4x4.

Do some research at the Kelley Blue Book website, print up the information on the trucks you are looking at, and use this information for your purchase.

Always do your homework before buying any truck/auto.

I have an 1999 Ext Cab with the 3.0L Automatic 2wd. It has a problem where the winshield wipers come on unexpectedly. There's been a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) on that.
The door handle on the drivers side is hard to pull up.
There's a TSB on the transmissio too although I don't remember too much about it.
I'm getting 28 mpg with the tires fully inflated and no AC.
I paid 2550 about a year ago for it.

One of the biggest draw backs to the 98-2000 ranger 4x4's is that they use a pulse vacume hub systems that is very problematic. However, the fix is easy and cheap. You can get a set of AVM manual hubs from Tellico off road for a round 100.00$. AVM is the only ones making manual hubs for the pulse vacume system or PVS. So if it's not AVM, it won't fit. I would buy the 4.0 4x4 over a 3.0 4x2 any day my self.
