hey all. i have a 96 f-250 auto trans and am having problems with the shifter. the problem is when i turn the truck on and go to shift it into gear, my shifter won't budge. i can wiggle it toward and away from me but i can't get it to move past park. anyone have this problem or have any suggestions? thanks,
Chris
My first thought is the BTSI - Brake Transmission Shift Interlock.
Try this: take the key out, put it back in, but turn it JUST to the FIRST click clockwise. This should unlock the steering column (and the mechanical key/shift interlock), but won't engage the ignition system (and the electrical [I believe] BTSI). Put your foot on the brake, and try to shift out of Park. If it DOES come out of Park, then the BTSI isn't working.
BUT, it's possible the BTSI isn't working for some "upstream" reason, like the brake pedal switch. Check to make sure the brake lights in the back of the truck are going on when you hit the brakes.
Just now getting back to this truck...I unhooked the shift cable from the transmission so I know it isn't a tranny problem. I took most of the dash area apart to see if anything is broken but to the naked eye, everything looks fine. It isn't a broken cable because if I wiggle the shifter, the cable wiggles as well. I didn't have any luck doing the test above. No matter where I have the ignition, I still cannot shift, though the brake lights do work. Any more thoughts?
Thanks,
Chris
Update: I decided to drop the column since I knew it was something in that area that was bad. What I found was the shift interlock did infact work BUT the little spring like device that flicks down the lock when the brake is pressed and the shift lever is pulled must be bad. It all boiled down to a tiny little spring...
