Loading Up?

Loading Up?
Don't know how else to describe it. "65" 289HP, Holley 600 CFM, "76" Duraspark ign. Starting, idle, running fantastic. Only problem left is after a good run of 20 miles or so, stopping at traffic light or what ever, it doesn't want to idle. I can slip into neutral and rev to clear engine and it will idle back and everything is fine. Any suggestions on where problem might be?

Ok, going with that theory, cure? I have original carb spacer and correct gaskets mounting carb. Fuel inlet to carb is hard line from pump to carb except for last 6" with plastic filter. Engine temp running 190-200.

Electric choke, working properly, idle rpm's fine, just acts like it's flooding. As said, once I slip it into neutral it will clear out and idle. Just doesn't want to idle in gear after stopping.

Holley 600cfm. There's a problem to begin with. Does it need a rebuild? The gasket metering surfaces need to be checked but first change the needle and seat assys and set the fuel level correctly. Holley's website can provide you with all the info you would need.

When you say "clear out" what do you mean? Goose it a bit to get the revs up? Is there any kind of smoke from the exhaust when you do this?
I had a carb with gummed/clogged idle circuits that wouldn't idle once the choke (and therefore fast idle) disengaged. With enough air it could draw fuel through the primary boosters but not through the idle passages.
Maybe the idle screws are backed out so far the plates are closing completely under load? Is there any adjustment built into the secondaries?

Baron: Yea, rev up and it clears problem, will have to look for smoke.
Kaboom: I guess a rebuild wouldn't hurt. Darn thing runs great except for this problem.
While I have partially rebuilt carbs before, I'll have to bone up on this carb. Holley does have fair info site, but have had real good luck with their tech guy's. Thanks for the help. Seen a kit on Horsepower for this 4160, new floats, metering blocks, turning into dual feed, might check it out.

The modular design of the holley makes them a snap to do. Just be careful removing the power valve by doing it with an old gasket on the metering block. I wonder if any of the tech guys are ones I used to work with before they moved down south?
