02' V-10 F550 6th fuel pump

My fire district has a 02' F550, v-10, auto, it is used as a Grass/attack truck it is now going on its 6th fuel in the last 2 years. The truck runs fine and then is parked at the station, the next time you go to use it, it will start, put it in gear and then dies, fuel pump bad. The mechanic that replaces the pump is a independent, I am trying to convince the chief to take it to a Ford garage. I think there is a short somewhere that is taken out the fuel pump. Any ideas?

I'd suspect either a wiring issue or obstruction in the mixing chamber in the fuel tank. A restriction at the fuel pick up could strain the pump and cause failure.

Thanks for the reply. I am thinking along the same lines as you. What about a kink in a fuel line?

I would think a kinked line is unlikely. The lines are pretty well protected and if it were kinked near the pump from the swap out, it should have been caught by now. Have you been changing the fuel filter each time? Is the mechanic checking voltage readings or checking the wiring for continuity? I'd also have them check the fuel pressure on the new pump to make sure it's within spec.

Follow up: Ended up being a bad ground in the wiring harness, I hope.
