No spark on cold start up. My '90 Ranger 4.0L, Auto, 4x4 has intermittent ignition problems. With timing light hooked up there is no spark on initial crank . If I try it 2 or 3 times it usually starts up. Suggestions have been made about the fuel pump and vacuum lines but unless Ford put a sensor to stop ignition if there is no fuel pressure how would that be related?? I suspect the crank position sensor or the coil pack possibly the ignition module but I had that checked out Saturday. Reluctant to throw parts at it . Suggestions appreciated. Thanks Stan.
My first guess would be the ignition module. If this is the TFI module, on the distributor, they have given a lot of trouble. Since the trouble is intermittant, the module could test good, but still be bad under certain conditions. The cps tends to either work or not work, but not give intermittent problems. Good luck.
This truck has the control module mounted up front near the radiator if that would make any difference, and the coil pack is one unit all six in one . I went ahead and replaced the pick up sensor but I don't think that was it.
Some one suggested a possible bad ground connection , as I also had a slow starter(cranked slow) a few times when it didn't start on the first try. Possibly both problems related..
I will look for a bad connection as this truck had the engine rebuilt in '98. Maybe some one forgot a ground strap..
