Ive been lookin at some of the other trucks on here, and noticed that mine dont have the chrome trim along the bottom of the truck in between the wheel wells. I have a hunch that its been painted before but it had to have been a long time ago, cause if you run your hand where the two tone is you can feel the difference between the coats of paint. It also dont have clearcoat. I have this hunch because its not as rusted out as a lot of the trucks that are around where I live. I also cant find any holes where the trim would mount. It is also a Ranger XLT.
my truck is a Custom (I believe) and all of the badges are gone. the truck was repainted, too, cause there's no clearcoat and the inside of the bed and the front of the hood don't exactally match the rest of the truck.
These trucks never came with clearcoat paint jobs. Back in the 70s, it was always a single stage paint job with no clearcoat.
1985 Ford F150: I looked at your gallery and I would say that your truck has definitely been repainted at some point over the years. Being that it's a Ranger XLT model, it would have originally had the rocker panel mouldings and wheel well mouldings. When it was repainted, they probably removed those mouldings and filled the holes. Go underneath the truck and look at the body panels from behind, you'll probably be able to see where the holes from the trim were located.
I believe 1994 for Ford Trucks (based on the fact that my '94 Lightning had a clear coat but a friend's '93 Lightning did not).
Actually, I think 1987 was the first year for basecoat/clearcoat paint on trucks. My wife and I both have 92 F150s with original paint, and they have basecoat/clearcoat paint jobs.
Are you sure they're rust bubbles, and not brazing puddles? I would hope that the holes weren't just filled with body filler, as it wicks moisture fiercely. Usually, old moulding holes are brazed closed if the bodyman knew what they were doing. Your paint scheme indicates to me that it is a repaint because it resembles the racetrack style, which was not available until '77. 2-tone scheme on '76 - older did not have a color change down at the rocker and over the wheel-well. It just changed color at the upper trim. I do believe that all the XLT's did have the lower rocker moulding, though, unless the racetrack trim was used ('77-79). Ranger's offered the lower moulding as part of an option group. The hardest pieces to find in the past were the tool-box related pieces (3 each), but they are finally being reproduced by DC (and whomever else they supply).
Yeah theyre rust bubbles the paint has chipped off and you can see the rust there its not alot but its there. Im also wonderin if the door skins were replaced cause if I push on em it does the ba bump thing. If I ever get it repainted I think ill try to hunt all the missin trim down then paint it black inside and out. Then ill get the new body panel I need from dc. My dad restored an old chevy we had with lmc parts and they were garbage.
