Question Bone Marrow Donation?

Has anyone here ever donated bone marrow? I've been donating blood since I was 17 but have never even thought about donating bone marrow. A little girl in our community has leukemia and they're having a drive to find potential donors and I'm thinking about seeing if I'm compatible. Just looking for some input from someone who has actually donated bone marrow. Thanks!

I think they start with an ordinary blood test. Small needle.

You only get the big needle if doctors consider you a potential donor.

I`ve heard it is really tough. Have you checked out mayoclinic.com to see if there is any information?

They did that here too, a little boy needed some and so they were having drives all over town. I did go get tested to try to help and just to be on the registry because I know if it were my child I would want as many people as possible to try to find a match. I wasn't a match for him but they did call me a few months ago and ask me how far I would be willing to travel if they paid for it and I said I'll go anywhere! I give blood every time they come to where I work which is 4 times a year. I've been doing that for over 3 years now.

Do it! To get tested all you have to do is rub 4 Q-tips in each of the four corners of your mouth.

Depends on how they do it. Either way doesn't feel good but it's worth it to save another life. I gave bone marrow three times for my sister. First out of the hips. They knocked me out and drew it out with a huge needle. I was extremely sore but I still drove from KC to Springfield, MO the next for class. The 2nd and 3rd was a big needle in my arm, they kept in for a couple day. Basically they drew the blood into a centrifuge and strained out the marrow and released the blood back into the body through the out part of the needle. Can't remember that one. I was younger back then but I'd do it again if I had to. Can't remember the test but I was a perfect match for my sister.. she didn't have any hints of graph versus host disease.

I was tested a few years back when a local persons daughter needed a marrow transplant. Approximately 75 folks got tested...and...while no one was a match...they did find a donor from the registry. She's doing very well today.

Hopefully I'm still in their data bank...I would welcome the opportunity to help someone out.

ericsmith32,
Sounds like your 2nd and 3rd were stem cell harvests.

My son was a perfect match for our daughter when she had leukemia. They tested all of us and only had to draw about 3 vials of blood each for the test. Since our daughter was only 4 at the time she was not eligible for a stem cell transplant so had to do bone marrow. They sedated our son and harvested marrow from the back of his hip. Two puncture sites on the skin, but drew marrow from the bone in 4 or 5 places. He was sore afterwards, but healed quickly without any complications. He was a trooper! Daily blood draws for a week, iron supplements as well. He was only 6 at the time. Our daughter has been cancer free for 6 years now~

Sign up for the registry. What a joy it would be to help cure someone of cancer!

I hear that it does hurt quite a bit, but it's worth it to save a life. A little while ago they were having a drive around here and I was going to go and get signed up but I came down with the one of the worst stomach virus's I've ever had and couldn't go. I'll go next time though.

I feel exactly the same way. It'd give me a lifelong warm fuzzy knowing I'd helped save a life. I am in the database, BTW.

Go for it regardless Bruker!
