D44 TTB increase ratio

Ok so i've been told that if you go over 3.73 you'll need a new housing. Open housing are cheap and all fine and dandy, however i think my is some type of locker cause the wheels hop if your not on soft ground. So in order to upgrade my ratio to 4.56s i take it i would have to buy a whole new locker or limited slip differential.

Am i right?

Secondly, I'll probably just get 33" BFGs, but was wondering if anyone thinks that 35s would be too much for that split axle.

If you cross the 3.93 line, you have to change the carrier. Not the housing. This is where a limited slip or locker lives, so you have to get a new one. I doubt you have a locked front end unless someone did it after it was purchased. Limited slips from the factory were very rare in the front, although anything is possible. If you jack one wheel up with the t-case in 2hi, can you spin the tire with the hub locked? If yes, then it's an open differential.

I haven't jacked it up at all, but in 2h if i lock one hub in the front drive will spin freely if i turn it. If i lock both hubs in then it will lock up with the tires. Now that i just read what i wrote i realize the answer is yes, so it's a open diff and that'll save me a few hundred bucks. thanks
