Have 1986 f250 with dual gas tanks. The front tank works fine.
but when using the back tank, the fuel gauge does not work. it used to then stoped. Would like to troubleshoot this problem.
how is it done, do they run a small current thru the sender? is the sender just a resistor? Have the book but no info on dual tanks.
Do you still get fuel to the engine from that tank that the SU doesn't work on?
If so, the problem is in the Sending unit or the the ground for the sending unit. To confirm, go to the sending unit and attach a test light to the power connector ,then get someone to turn the key on,if there is a pulse of current at the connector the problem is definitely the SU or its ground.
There's your troubleshoot.
If you didn't still get fuel from the tank it would mean wiring problems.

You can also take the wire off the sending unit in the back, and with the ignition key on, and the fuel switch in the rear position, take the wire that goes to the sending unit, and ground it to a metal part of the frame. Then take it off the ground and let it hang in the air. Everytime you do this the fuel guage should sweep back and forth. This will tell you if your wiring and fuel switch are working correctly.
