fuel gauge pegged

In my friends '87 F150 w/300-6, his fuel gauge pegs out way past full when you turn the key on. What's happening? Is a bad sender, gauge, or wire? Or???

Thanks for your help.

fuel gauge pegged

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Mar-02 AT 09:32 PM (EST)]It means the wiring has a short to Ground, possibly because of signal wire touching metal or the sending unit is grounding out.

Pull the connection off the sending unit,if the gauge is still pegged the problem is in the wiring.
