how much work, how much money and how much good is it to change from the stock rear end in my '01 diesel to the 4:10.I'm getting good fuel mileage, but find that I'm spending a lot of time with my foot in the accelerator..I felt that after replacing 4 injectors,I shouldn't be slow close to the floor so much of the time but it ain't happening.I am pulling about 8500# so shouldn't be feeling it that much...
bigdog55, I tow my 8500# travel trailer with a V10/4:30 rears with hardly any effort at all. I might suggest that if you are going to re-gear to go with the 4:30's also. Not that much difference between the 4:10's and 4:30's so you may as well have the advantage of the little deeper gears. As for cost you are probably looking at about $1.000 per axle. (ie 4x4 $2,000)
Thanks for the replies.. I hope that everything is working.. As has been posted,I've replaced 4 injectors in the last month, three at one time while on vacation and then one after we got back. the first three were 1-3-5 and then the last one was #8.I've got good fuel pressure 55-60# and the compression is right at 400#..Don't know what else could be wrong 'cuz they also changed the ISP and two harnesses the first time also.. Any suggestions would be readily accepted..The way things are going,it might be better to try and upgrade to an '04 or an '05 instead of putting anymore money into this one.Except that the 7.3 is the better engine..
Well, I dunno how well my Ex towed when it was stock, but I know with the F5 chip from Jody at DP-Tuner my rig pulls like there's no tomorrow, without breaking a sweat.
But before you call up Jody and order his magical tunes, you need to make sure you don't have anything else affecting your towing performance.
Hop on over to the 7.3L forum and post up your concerns over there. I know the first responses and questions will be for you to check for certain problems, diagnose anything that may be wrong, and to ask if you have guages installed, because your responses to those questions will all help them to better help you.
heavy metal, why would the 4.30's "put him over"? in the excursions, they offered only a 3.73 and 4.30 gear ratios? if i was going to spend money on a regear, i wouldn't waste it on 4.10's. thats bearly any difference...

PSD's don't rev as high as gassers do. Their "usable" RPM range is considerably lower than gas powered vehicles, plus if I remember correctly, the "sweet spot" in the power band is not the same as the gasser, it's lower.
I have 4:10's in my E350 PSD. I would have killed to have 3.73's in that pulling my enclosed trailer with cargo.
I do have a simple Super Chips Micro Tuner in that though. Helps the fueling and the transmission shift like someone who knew what he was doing rather than how it is stock.
Yes, I'd look at the DP Tuner.
What size tires do you have? I went with larger tires than stock on my E350 to lower the overall gear ratio so I could have a little better ground speed in the PSD sweet spot.
My Excursion has 285/75R16's which are bigger than stock, making my overall gear ratio lower than the 3.73's. I didn't put them on there, it came that way. I like the ground speed in the sweet spot, so I might be leaving them on.
