Like most in here I've had hella ignition problems. Down to changing the p/u coil in the dist. (Dura Spark) and need to know how to get the armature off the shaft. I've removed the snapring. Now, is it just a matter of removing the roll pin? If so how do I get that sucker out. thx
You don't need to remove the roll pin, you just need to catch it when it comes out to keep from losing it down in the dist. Take two large screwdrivers on opposite sides and pry equally up on the wheel. Sometimes they are hard to get off.
did as u said guys and it finally came off. thanks for the help
the roll pin did go flying, so i thought, lucky me it somehow came down and stuck to p-up coil.
I can't find the retainer to remove the spoked armature from the advance plate sleeve so I can replace a defective pickup coil on a 1977 V8. Please help.
Does not show a retainer. Maybe not all models have one? That could possibly be why they use a roll pin as a key. The roll pin when installed, can be closed shut a little bit from the press fit, holding pressure on the wheel to keep it from coming off. It's been a long time since I have had one of these apart.
I think they all used the roll pin as a "press fit" retainer. The armature should pull directly off the shaft. By the way, a small battery cable puller is perfect for this job ($2-3 at auto parts store).
Talk about having fun, try changing the distributor module on the side of a mountain. I once had one go out on the side of a mountain while four wheeling in my 78 Bronco. Lucky for me I carried a spair Ign. module, Dist. modlue, and a spair coil, the only three things that can kill the ign. system of a a dura spark II system, except of course for wiring.
[B]Hi- I got the armature off easily when you said no retainer was present by using two wood chisels one on each side. Armature had TWO roll pin slots 180 deg apart so if one doesn't mark the one used it could be installed 180 deg off. There was a very thin circular wire ring holding the magnetic pickup assembly to the short base plate sleeve that was hard to see. I removed it with a small ice pick. I found a new pickup coil at Pep Boys and got my truck running again. To determine the coil was bad, I connected my ohmmeter to it and directed a hair dryer on it and watched the resistance climb and then it suddenly opened circuited all at once. Thanks for all your help. I think my engine intermittantly dying on me is solved..
